Glass from seaweed and beach sand. Porthmeor 2019

I saw old kelp pits on the Isles of Scilly and found that for many centuries seaweed was gathered in Cornwall, burnt and sold to the glass industry as flux. I followed ancient methods, using not only the seaweed but the sand from my local beaches. The short film Flux is the record of a single summer spent making glass from sand and seaweed on the far west Cornwall coast. The glass was made at a participatory event titled Estover at Kestle Barton Gallery 2019. Estover is an ancient right to take what you need from the land, which I interpret emotionally as well as practically.
